Repurposed Cover Art to create Social Banners

Created looping Spotify Canvases for each song

The Flash EP came off the back of our previous EP, Summer’s For Lovers. Our first single from The Flash EP was Alone - but we hadn’t solidified an EP title or concept yet. With this in mind, I wanted the cover to distil a work in progress while still having simple design elements that could be transferred across to the upcoming cover arts and other assets, like the 1975 has done since their inception with the “box”.

I came across printer test pages & felt it was fitting. The alignment crosses used to calibrate the outer bounds of a page, and the CMYK squares were simple enough to transfer design elements, and the CMYK colours could be used to inform the main background colours of each of the following cover arts.

The colours were selected based on the overall emotion of the song, but ended up being quite limiting - Headstrong felt the most mellow, so that became blue. Overdrive felt a bit hot & risky, so that took on pink. Heaven’s Where You Are became yellow due to the connotation to light. Finally, the artwork culminates to black at Flash, not only because it was the only colour left, but because when all the colours are added together, it forms black. I used elements from digital camera HUDs such as the aiming reticle/rectangle, and the flash icon. I blended in primarily paper & grain overlays on the first four cover arts to add texture, but used digital camcorder & VHS textures on the Flash EP cover to give the covers a sense of progression.

Due to limited studio time, the band was unable to shoot specific content for each song’s Spotify canvases. I used a variety of stock footage, with various VHS, camcorder, and other overlays to add personality to the footage, as well as used design elements like the CMYK squares & alignment crosses to help tie the canvases with the cover art.
